High production costs hampering 3D TV content growth

Content and specifically it is the lack of quality content in 3D format is what bugs the growth of 3D TV like locust on a farmland.

The astronomical cost of production of a program in 3D format is what is scaring off most entrepreneurs and tech people even though they are interested in the 3D format for their creativity. This was concluded by Ovum — a research firm who conducted their survey in May amongst many top executives of the 3D production companies. The effect of this has been resultant upon the consumers, 60 percent of whom have responded during a survey conducted by NPD/CTAM in June about the poor content that is available in 3D.

Entrepreneurs in the US have yet gone ahead with some big time projects and invested in them. One of them is Tom Cosgrove, president of 3net, a 3D-only cable net from Discovery Communications, IMAX and Sony who says “For 3D to take off, content is going to be the key driver.”

The two networks that are of consequence in the 3D field is ESPN and 3net both of whom launched their 3D in the month of February. Distributors like  and ComcaDirectTVst though have given license to the 3D only and VOD channels to telecast 3D movies. The cost of maintaining a 3D channel is difficult given the low availability of content as of now and the cost of producing a new one including post production costs are way too high. As per Cosgrove the firm which conducted a survey in this aspect mentions that the near future would continue to be the same, the software solution of converting 2D to 3D also has not been able to yield quality end product.

Even with the high cost involved, ESPN and 3net both have created some original 3D content with 3net creating 20 hours of such content that covers a variety of topics. ESPN3D is also going to double its content streamed in 3D when compared to that last year taking Labour Day weekend as the time period to compare statistics.
