Its not only the woe of putting on the quite cumbersome glasses, but the necessity of having a specific glass for a specific TV set, is what bogs the 3D TV world to a great extent. Makers of 3D TV have been creating glasses that work only with their set and not the others. It therefore restricts a viewer for considering a change of TV set at a later date.

Visitors at the CES held in Las Vegas recently have been able to see firsthand the efforts that glasses maker Xpand 3D have put in, in collaboration with Panasonic, Samsung, Sony to come out with a universal 3D glass. This project had commenced last August and the result was seen at the Xpand 3Dbooth during the CES.

Using the glasses one was able to view 3D on different sets with the same picture effect. Even on PC which is 3D capable the same glass could be used for viewing. However, this glass only works with sets that are using active technology. Passive technology is a greater rave in the US as yet.

Other issue on incompatibility of the glasses is the fact that some TV makers are using infrared and others Bluetooth to sync the glasses with the set. While picking up the so called universal glass one has to make sure of the compatible one as far as the sensor being used on the set at home goes.

Toshiba, Philips and Sharp have also now indicated interest in the universal 3D glass. With time therefore one can expect the glass to become indeed universal. Only exception being LG, who is pursuing with the passive technology.

We can expect HDTV which would be compatible with the universal 3D viewing glass to start coming into the stores from March this year.
