Sony Unveils 84-inch 4K TV At IFA 2012

4K capable TV sets has been slowly making their presence in the market with manufacturers such as Toshiba, Samsung and LG that can be considered to be the pioneers in this field. Sony too has been in the news with unconfirmed reports of its next PlayStation to sport 4K resolution. However, the company sprung a surprise at the IFA 2012 event being held in Berlin where Sony showcased their 4K capable TV set of 84 inch dimension. Dubbed XBR-84X900, the TV boasts of a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

The Sony model uses 4KX Reality PRO picture engine technology which is Sony in-house development that upscales the picture format. It also can upscale 3D images to resolutions that are higher than HD as well. One can also connect accessories like a digital camera or a PlayStation 3 to the set.

For turning the set into a complete entertainment system, there is a 5.1 surround system audio feature incorporated in the set. There are two ventricle bar for sporting a 10 unit live speaker system. One can attach a home theater system also if one so wishes using the 5.1 surround system ports.

The set also has ability to connect to Sony Entertainment Network via Wi-Fi. One gains access to unlimited music and video via Netflix, Pandora and such other online services that provide these streams. One can also download the Media Remote app from the online store and load it on one’s tablet devices.

Sales of the TV would start later this year and it would be carried out only through Sony’s own retail stores. Price factor has not been announced by Sony till now. But given that the set can be compared with that of Samsung and LG it can be assumed that price could be anywhere between $15,000 to $20,000.
