Sony is set to launch its 3D TVs from June 10th in Japan to be followed later in other parts of the world. The 3D TV will have a 46-inch screen and will sport a price tag of $3875. Two pairs of 3D glasses will accompany each TV set.
Sony will be a late entrant in the 3D TV scene considering Panasonic is already available from Best Buy stores throughout the US while Samsung too has unveiled their 3D TVs in the US. 3D TVs from LG will start shipping from May. However, Vizio has revealed that their 3D TV lineup will be on offer from August onwards.
However, there are very limited options for watching 3D content at home. Although there are a few 3D movies in the offing, as is 3D enabled Blue-ray disc players, the fact that broadcast and cable content is still locked in a transition phase to 3D can limit the popularity of these 3D TVs.
There are a few silver linings though like the recent partnership between Sony and Discovery for a 3D TV network while ESPN in all set to launch its own 3D channel. Sony though is banking on 3D video games to drive 3D TV sales and hopes that the PlayStation 3, which is 3D enabled will lure in customers to try their new range of 3D TVs.
