Panasonic, Sony and Samsung want to standardize 3D TV

3D TV is in its infancy for customers to put it in their home and there are many differences that separate different types of technology employed. Some use active shutters, some passive and others use a wide array of glasses. The big companies that have a vested interest in seeing 3D TV do well in the market want to standardize the technology. This is a positive move for the industry and once a standard exists, it will be much easier for consumers to accept it.
The three companies are working with new technology called XPAND 3D, which is a new breed of active shutter glasses. The EXPAND glasses are made by a company that just makes the tech but not the TV to go along with them. Just last year Ami Dror, chief strategic officer, voiced the opinion to CNET that the current 3D glasses situation was making watching 3D TV a nightmare. ”If you’re watching the Super Bowl at a party, would you expect the guy hosting to go buy 15 pairs of glasses?”
These glasses will be used on all three manufactures TV’s going forward into the future. This would bring down the cost of the glasses and be affordable for a family to buy 3 or 4 pairs. It would also allow your friends who have TV’s to bring their own glasses over. Samsung, Sony and Panasonic also plan on making the technology backwards compatible, so even if you have a 3D TV purchased in 2011, you could still use the new tech.
The cross brand glasses will not see the light of day until 2012, but the standards will start to be employed towards the end of the year. The standard set between the 3 companies will not take effect until October and it takes time to develop new TV’s with enough features to impress.
