LG has set itself ambitious target of becoming the number one player in the 3D TV segment by 2012. For this, it is banking on its passive technology based 3D TV models which comes with the lightweight viewing glasses.

The beginning of the year saw LG holding a 4 percent market share with their passive 3D TV sets. This market share is expected to rise up to twenty percent given the present trends as per Lee Kwan-sup, who heads the marketing division for LG’s home entertainment unit.

By the end of next year LG has plans to cross Samsung as the world’s leading seller of 3D TVs.

As of now their plans are to equip 70 percent of their TV sets with 3D capability and also have plans to launch new TV sets starting next year, which would be based on organic LED technology.

As per Lee, “If we make a strong push into this newly developing premium segment, we can set a trend and establish an image as an innovator. This is a fortuitous cycle for us, and that’s why we’re really focusing on this 3D technology.”
