The next big event in the field of consumer electronics is the one being held in New York next week by the Consumer Electronics Association. One can expect the glasses free 3D TV technology, or autostereoscopic as it referred to being discussed there.

There would be a presentation conducted by Philadelphia based Stream TV Networks at the event where a 42 inch 3D set based on autostereoscopic technology would be demonstrated. There would also be technology that would be demonstrated at the event by Stream TV which would take the normal TV program coming over the satellite and convert it into 3D. They would also show applications that would convert content to be viewed on an Apple device and all these with no need for the 3D viewing glasses.

TV Channel giants like Discovery Communications, ESPN and DirecTV did show some interest in this field after the success of Avatar by James Cameron in 2009. But all these program require the viewers to wear the cumbersome 3D viewing glasses and therefore not much subscribed to.

However, high costs continues to be the limiting factor for 3D TVs based on autostereoscopic technology as of now. The one by Toshiba for example costs $10,000.
