As a research firm on electronic consumer goods, DisplaySearch on Wednesday stated in their report that there has been an increase in the trend for 3D TV and their shipments have increased. The reason they have placed for this increase is due to the increase in 3D contents both in the sports and movie genre.

The director of the firms’ European TV research team Paul Gray has predicted the shipment to reach a figure of 3.4 million this year whereas last year the number was 214,000 units.

According to him the increase in 3D movies that are being released by Hollywood which are on Blu-ray 3D discs is the main reason for people to opt for 3D TV sets.

He adds, “The formation of a 3D Blu-ray specification at the end of 2009 gave confidence that 3D was a consumer format and not just for movie theaters.” Samsung and Sony have already released players compatible for playing Blu-ray 3D format discs.

There are also the broadcasts of sporting events like the FIFA World Cup which has been broadcast in 3D. All these are helping the cause of interest in 3D TV.

Games like the one by Microsoft named the Kinect gaming kit with which the Xbox turns 3D compatible is also helping the 3D TV cause.

The 3D TV with flat screens is the latest and there are only two companies like Panasonic and Samsung who have come out with flat screens in 3D TV models. As per Gary there would be a number of new models that come up for display during the IFA consumer electronics show scheduled to be held in Berlin from Sep 3 to Sep 8.

There has been a plummeting effect on 3D TV price. While the Samsung 3D TV of 40 inch labeled LCD  UN40C7000 was priced at US $1,999 , a similar model from Amazon.com was available at $1,499.98 while on site named  B&H Photo and video it is available at $1,699.

DisplaySearch predicts the number to reach 42.9 million units by 2014. There is also research going on by Samsung to come out with a technology which would not require the viewer to wear the 3D viewing glasses.
