3D TV sales to top 5.99 million units worldwide

IMD research indicates that 3D TV is catching on fast with the consumers. As per their estimates 5.00 million 3D TV sets are expected to be sold worldwide in this year 2010 and more than 218 million 3D TV sets would be sold from 2010 to 2015.
The main areas identified by IMS as ones that is pushing 3D TV up the ladder of popularity and demand are the 3D movies that are being released of high quality and the intense competition that the home entertainment segment is facing as on date. This is also governing factors for their aggressive marketing and pricing policies. The report was published in their 3D Video and Gaming in the Home magazine.
The principal analyst of the IMS research team as well as s reporter herself Anna Hunt has said “Within five years, the majority of high-end large-screen TV sets and Blu-ray Disc players are likely to offer 3D capability. The price premium of 3D models in these markets over similar 2D products is expected to diminish quickly. Without a significant price premium, consumers are likely to future proof their purchases by opting for devices with 3D.” they have forecasted that over 241 million homes would have a 3D Blu-ray Disc Player and over 280 million households would have HD set top box and all this by 2015.
She has also gone on to state that “Aside from Blu-ray, many HD set-top boxes can facilitate delivery of 3D service from operators that use a frame compatible format. With such a large installed base of 3D-capable devices, content makers should see enough of an incentive to aggressively pursue 3D content creation.” There has been a trend now where pay TV operators are going to offer or are already offering 3D content to the HDTV subscribers and all this at no additional cost. This may go on till more 3D content becomes available.
One other research firm In-Styat has come out with similar result for their market analysis. As per them one in five new TV would be 3D for the US market by 2013. They have also predicted a growth in sales by 231% between 2010 and 2011. This would result in doubling up of the US installed base of units for 3D TV between the period of 2010 and 2011.
In-stat analyst Stephaine Ethier had this to say “High definition did create a wave of activity in the US market, not seen since the introduction of color, 3DTV promises to be the next significant innovation wave for living room entertainment.”
