3D TV Entertainment in Flight: 63% Want it Glasses Free
You are up in the air making your way through the clouds and the most common form of entertainment is the screen of the TV provided or your laptop. However, things surely would take on a new dimension if its 3D TVs that are there to keep you entertained. That is great though here too passengers would prefer to have it sans the 3d glasses. As was revealed in a recent survey carried out by 3D Focus on the issue of 3D viewing while in flight, 63 percent responded with a yes, 24 percent were not sure and 13 percent said no. The study was carried out amongst 525 readers of their magazine.
However, people who read 3D focus would be quite a biased group mentally for the 3D format. The result may be quite different if non 3D focus readers had been included in the study. There is more survey results that 3D focus is preparing for the people at large and that indicates even 3D Focus readers are not majority for the technology.
In flight 3D means the viewing person will just be one only as also the position would be fixed. These issues makes the use of glasses free passive technology more feasible than ones at home or other public places. So people who have said yes to in-flight 3D have insisted on the glasses free viewing capability.
Making use of the specialist overlays, retro-fitment of glasses free 3D technology could be undertaken in the cabins. There is quite an increase in availability of content in 3D format today. In case the IFE system is updated it would allow for side-by-side formats being played on the screens.
The present IFE systems allow for passengers to even plug in their personal mobile devices and view the contents on the seat back screen. There is also Qantas and Jetstar who are trying out leasing an iPad to the passengers at the rate of $10 or $15 per flight. The contents of the iPad though are pre-loaded.
Another airline — the Lufthansa of Germany would be making their entire passenger space a hot spot with a technology named Boardconnect. Entertainment content would be streamed all over the passenger space and can be picked up using any device like the Smartphone or the tablet computers.
Virgin Atlantic is going to make arrangement for people on board their flight being able to plug in their USB to view its contents on the seat back screen. For those in the Premium Economy and Upper class provision to plug in devices like tablet would also be there.
That there is progress in the introduction of 3D and that too glassless 3D entertainment into the in-flight and luxury car segments was clear when Masterimage 3D conformed the same to The Hollywood reporter last year. Talks they said had reached advanced stages, and on successful agreement would mean license agreement would be granted to the airlines and car manufacturing people for using this technology in their flights’ and cars.
The project though would take another 2 to 3 years to fructify properly, as per Roy Taylor the Executive VP and GM of 3D Display at MasterImage.
