3D TV and projector sales show positive growth
If we are to believe the latest information from NPD DisplayResearch that came out last week, there has been a massive increment in the 3D HD TV shipments that corresponds to almost 6.6 million units at the end of September 2011. This huge increase amounts to a 27 percent boost in shipment since last year. The research organization NPD DisplayResearch also looks forward to the increment of shipments that will definitely increase by yet another 30 percent in the 4th quarter this year. NPD DisplayResearch is also all hopes about the market penetration of 3D LCD TV that will touch almost 10 percent in the market of the United States by the end of this year. This increase in percentage will increase the number of total 3D TVs in U.S. household by a huge number that will definitely touch 21.5 million. According to the calculations of NPD DisplayResearch standard HD TV sales will share a market space that is a little less than 80 percent by the end of 2012. Accordingly the TV makers are making lesser 2D TV sets and are all set to cut down the price tag of the 3D panels.
Similarly, there has been a huge increase in sales of 3D-enabled projectors that amounts to an approximate value of 121 percent in the 3rd quarter of this year. If we are to believe in a report from Quixel Research the increase in the percentage of 3D TV sales will now lead to an increased home theatre projector installation in the United States that is approximated to be around 16 percent. As per the expectations of Quixel Research more than 50 percent of all the projectors that have been released in the United States market will be 3D-enabled by the end of the next year. On one hand where the sales of 3D projector have steadily grown over the first 9 months of the year 2011, the sales of 2D projector have taken a fall by an approximate value that is close to 20 percent.
So while it is a truth that users are increasingly investing on 3D TV sets and projectors, on the other side of the coin there are very little amount of 3D content available for the customers to see. Most of the 3D contents nowadays are limited to a few programs aired on channels on cable TVs and satellite channels. As per a study that was conducted by Retrevo earlier this month, almost 40 percent of TV users were apprehensive about the amount of content as in TV shows and movies that is available in 3D format. Almost a majority, i.e. over 50 percent of the group of the users was not at all interested to invest more funds for a 3D-enabled TV set and it should be kept in mind that the normal cost of enhancing from 2D to 3D used to be around $400 as per the market feedbacks of the last two months. To add to the information, just one-third of the group intends to invest in a 3DTV during 2012.
