3D movies doing better in Canada then the USA

Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob recently proclaimed that the 3D craze in theaters is more prevalent in Canada then the USA. Jacobs owns the largest chain of movie threatres in Canada and has seen profits increase 26.8% in June from last year.
This is not a fad,” he insisted Thursday after earlier in the day posting his latest financial results. “We are seeing continued strength in 3D, and our performance compared to the U.S. is much stronger, where on individual movies and particular weekends we can open to 60 percent-plus in 3D, compared to U.S. exhibitors that are in the 45 percent to 50 percent range,” he added.
“We have not seen any drop of any significance,” he said of the year-on-year rise after Canadians this year donned the funny glasses to view in his theaters the Johnny Depp-starrer Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Shrek Forever After, How to Train your Dragon, Clash of the Titans and Toy Story 3.
The main reason why Cineplex Movies houses do well is because of the half-price off Tuesday deals that it has been doing since forever. Many people will go and see the higher priced 3D movie on those days because they save money.
One of the most telling statistics on how well the Canadian market does is with the 3D movie sensation Avatar. Canadian threatres accounted for over 29% of the North American Sales. Many other movies being shown are not the high quality that Avatar did and many movie goers are becoming jaded at the quality of 3D. Many movies that are done in 3D were only made that way doing post production and don’t look that great.
